Whack-a-Mole
Whack-a-Mole. Ever played it? If not, I urge you to take a ride down to your local arcade and find it. Any arcade worth its salt has at least one Whack-a-Mole. Myself, I'm not tempted by Skee-Ball, stuffed animal cranes, throwing darts at balloons, throwing baskeballs into hoops, pinball, or the myriad video games. No, sir. For me it's Whack-a-Mole. Put your money in, grab the padded mallet, and whack them moles as they randomly pop their heads up through them holes. I defy you to restrain yourself as you are worked into a frenzy while attempting to knock the piss out of the little bastards. There's one! Whack it. There's another! Whack it! Another! Missed it! and another! missed again! dammit!! You're a serial killer wielding a padded tethered mallet! There's another! The rage and visceral hatred for the artificial rodents consumes every fiber of your being! There's another! Whackit! They keep popping up! They keep popping out! Popping up! You're a maniac!! Driven to the brink of insanity as the adrenalin surges and pulses through your body. All you wanted was to have a little fun, huh?! Whack!..whack!..whack!...whack!....... GAME OVER.... Awwwe, shucks. No free plays. No extended time. Didn't whack enough moles. Came close, though. Got a few tickets to be redeemed at the crap stand. A keychain, a pencil with a glitter exterior maybe. As I walk away, dejected, it occurs to me that Whack-a-Mole is a metaphor for life. Things keep popping up. Car problems, parking tickets, car registration, car insurance, blemishes, pimples, warts, hang nails, gray hair, nose hair, ear hair, canker sores, sinus infections, intestinal discomfort, headaches, body aches, hemorrhoids, cancer....Oh, sorry. Did I bum you out? Keep whackin' them moles!
